I Love This...
The Dachshund & Pink the Pig This Dachshund is fostering this little guy for another mom who couldn't take care of him. He had his eyes closed, but now they are open. He is just a little bigger than her other pups. She loves this little guy as much as the other puppies and she is nursing him back to health. He is the cleanest pig-uppy ever because she licks him all the time. HIS NAME IS PINK....

I Must be Getting Old...
When I think about my kids getting older, it's not so much the birthdays that determine that for me, but the steps toward their independence that do, such as when Allie watched the siblings for the first time, or when each one takes that first trip off the island with the car-Yikes! These kind of mile stones aren't huge for them, but they certainly are for me. Letting them do it is the challenge I face and the hurdle I have to get over every time.
Stevie had such a hurdle yesterday when we were faced with the problem of getting him to soccer practice while I still had a class to teach. Thanks to an older friend of his at school, we figured out that he could ride the transit with him, hang out in Coupeville until his practice started, and then meet me at Karli's practice field later. Great! But let him ride the transit? This was a BIG deal ( bigger for mom, who has heard lots of "really weird guy on the bus" stories). But all went well, and according to Stevie, there was only one weird guy who got off at the court house, probably to check in with his probation officer. So all went well, I am happy to say, and later I even left him home by himself with a pizza in the oven! and he didn't burn down the house!
O.k., so I know that this is probably seen as no big deal, and after all , the kid is 14- but it's big to me because it reminds me that time goes on, kids grow up, and I continue to get older. I suddenly feel the need to plunk my teeth into a glass of water and shuffle off to bed...

Handsome is as Handsome Does
I was truly thrilled to be included into the special indian tribe and given the honorary job of "carver" for our school nature walk! WOW! We learned what the native tribes ate and how they built their lodges. Stevie was a "Food Gatherer" which was a very appropriate job for him. Trouble is that we doubt he would share. He just practiced his cool middle-school aged smirk with the slump against the tree and arms crossed. Very cool.

O.k., so I'm finally getting to this blog (I can't let Karli out do me!) but it's kind of intimidating! WOW, where do I start? How about with this....
Tonight, as my sweet little Karli was ready to head up to bed, she REALLY wanted me to tuck her in. Slowly, (very slowly) I caught on that just maybe something was up. You would think that after 5 kids and 23 years of bedtime drama I would catch on a little quicker. Heading into her bedroom and crawling under the canopy/tent/cocoon cover that was an old sheet draped over her bed posts, held in place with pencils that were strategically jammed into where the tops were supposed to be (hey, creativity at its best), I asked Karli what was eating at her. I don't do well at prying the problem out of her-I just don't have the patience in trying it, and thankfully she was pretty quick to share. As a tear rolled down the bridge of her cute little nose, she squeeked out that she misses Allie, her big sister. (Allie, are you listening?) We talked about Allie and Garrison's move to Savannah, and how its such an exciting adventure for them, but to be honest, I felt a watery eye coming on. I'm so excited for them, but boy, it sure would be nice to get them back sometime in the near future. Karli and I both agree. And that doesn't happen every day!
